What Size Skateboard Do You Need? Deck Size Guide
Short answer: go by deck width and match it to your shoe size. Most adults land between 8.0 and 8.5 inch. Length barely matters and almost nobody chooses a board on it.
Skateboards are sized by the width of the deck in inches. An “8.25” is a deck 8.25 inches across, and that single number decides how the board feels more than anything else you can buy.

Why does width matter more than length?
Most standard decks run a similar length and wheelbase, so when skaters talk about board size they almost always mean width in inches.
Narrower decks are lighter and flip faster, which suits technical street. Wider decks are more stable underfoot, which suits transition, ramps, cruising and bigger riders. Neither is better — they are built for different things.
Half an inch of width is a genuinely different board. Going from 8.0 to 8.5 changes how fast it flicks, how stable it feels landing, and how much effort it takes to get on edge. Half an inch of length is almost imperceptible. Nobody has ever ridden a board and said it was too long.

These ranges overlap on purpose. A street skater with bigger feet might still prefer an 8.25 for the faster flip, and a transition skater might size up for stability. Shoe size is a starting point, not a rule.
How do you pick within your range?
- Technical street and flip tricks: go narrower, 8.0 to 8.25 inch. Less weight, faster flips, quicker response.
- All-round street and park: 8.25 to 8.5 inch is the sweet spot most skaters land on. Stable enough for everything, still nimble.
- Transition, ramps, bowls and vert: go wider, 8.5 inch and up. More foot platform, more stability at speed and on coping.
- Cruising and old school: wider shaped or old school decks, 8.75 inch and up, give a planted, comfortable ride.
- Just starting out: an 8.0 to 8.5 inch complete is the safest first board. Forgiving, versatile, easy to progress on.
How long is a skateboard? Standard dimensions
A standard skateboard deck is 31 to 32.5 inches long, roughly 79 to 82.5cm. Wheelbase — the distance between the truck mounting holes — is usually 13.5 to 14.5 inches, about 34 to 37cm.
Length varies far less than width and it is not how boards are sold. Two 8.25 inch decks from different brands might be 31.75 and 32.125 inches and feel almost identical.
Wheelbase is the length number that actually matters. A longer wheelbase feels more stable and turns wider. A shorter one turns tighter and feels twitchier. If a board feels wrong and the width is right, wheelbase is usually why.
What about kids?
Kids sizing works on the same principle but the numbers are smaller, and age matters as a starting point in a way it does not for adults. Broadly: 6.5 to 7.25 inch for ages 3 to 5, 7.3 to 7.5 inch for 5 to 8, and 7.5 to 7.75 inch from about 8 to 12.

Should you buy a deck or a complete?
If you are new, a complete skateboard comes set up and ready to ride straight out of the box, which is the easiest way to start. If you are building a custom setup or replacing a snapped deck, you will choose a deck on its own and pair it with your own trucks, wheels and bearings.
Either way the width guide above applies, because it is the deck width that determines your size.
Trucks should match your deck width — axle width close to deck width keeps the board turning predictably. Wheels are about surface, not rider size: 52 to 54mm at 99a to 101a for street and park, 54 to 58mm for transition, and 56 to 65mm at 78a to 87a for cruising rough footpaths.
