What makes men's snowboard pants different?

Cut and rise, mostly. Men's pants generally run with a longer rise and a straighter leg, built around a different hip-to-waist ratio. That sounds like detail until you are strapped in on a chairlift and the waistband is either digging in or gapping at the back.

The other thing riders underestimate is how much time pants spend in contact with snow. Boards get chosen over hours. Pants get chosen in five minutes, and then spend the whole season being sat on.

Baggy, regular or technical fit?

This is the real decision on a men's pant, and it is as much about how you ride as how you want to look.

• Baggy and street-influenced gives maximum movement, layers easily, and is the park and freestyle default. It is also more forgiving if you are between sizes.
• Regular fit is the middle ground and suits most all-mountain riders.
• Technical and trimmer suits touring and high-output riding, where excess fabric catches on packs and flaps at speed.

Whichever you pick, size it over the base layer you actually ride in, not over jeans in the shop.

What waterproof rating do you need?

Pants sit closer to the snow than anything else you wear. You sit on chairlifts, you kneel to strap in, and if you are learning or riding park you are on the ground regularly. 10K is the minimum for regular Australian riding, and 15K to 20K if you ride wet days or put in heavy park sessions.
