Frequently Asked Questions

15K is the minimum for Australian conditions, and 20K or GORE-TEX if you ride hard or spend time sitting and kneeling. Pants are in constant contact with the snow, so they warrant equal or better waterproofing than your jacket.

Shell pants are the more adaptable choice for Australia. Pair them with base-layer leggings and add warmth only when you need it. Insulated pants are warmer on a cold morning but can be far too much by a warm spring afternoon.

They should sit comfortably at the hip with room to move, since you are constantly bending and crouching. Check the rise carefully, because too low and they gap at the back when you are strapped in and sitting down. Try them on over the base layer you actually ride in.

Boot gaiters are internal cuffs that seal over the top of your boots to keep snow out. They are effectively non-negotiable on snowboard pants, because without them snow works its way in every time you fall or sit down.

Pants sit at the waist and are quicker on and off, which is why most riders stay with them. Bibs extend coverage up the torso and seal snow out entirely, so they are warmer and more watertight but less convenient. If you ride powder or spend time on the ground, bibs are worth it.

Many snowboard pants include a connection point that zips to your jacket's powder skirt, creating a fully sealed system. It is worth checking compatibility if you want that, since it makes a real difference on deep or wet days.
