Powder days are why we ride. A board built for powder floats instead of fighting, slashes instead of sinking, and saves your back leg from the burn that comes from leaning back all day on the wrong shape. We carry powder and freeride snowboards from Jones, Korua Shapes, Lib Tech, Burton, YES and more — the directional shapes, swallowtails and volume-shifted boards built specifically to stay on top of deep snow. In stock at our Richmond showroom, free shipping Australia-wide on orders over $90, authorised Australian dealer across every brand.
Frequently Asked Questions
Any board will get you down a fresh fall, but a board built for powder changes the experience. It floats instead of fighting and saves your back leg from the burn that comes from leaning back all day on the wrong shape. For most Australian riders a powder specialist is a second board rather than a first one.
A volume-shifted board takes the surface area of your normal size and redistributes it: shorter overall, noticeably wider underfoot, ridden several centimetres down from your usual length. You get the float of a longer board with a much shorter swing weight, so it comes around quickly and fits through gaps a full-length board cannot.
A swallowtail removes material from the tail so it sinks deliberately, lifting the nose with no input from you. In deep open terrain the feel is unmatched. The trade-off is that it is a specialist and becomes less useful once the snow firms up.
Taper means the nose is wider than the tail, so the board floats nose-up naturally while still holding an edge on hardpack. It is the reason most freeride boards work as well as they do, and it is the best middle ground between a full powder shape and an all-mountain board.
Storm days at Falls Creek, Hotham, Buller and Perisher are real, but our snow is heavier and wetter than overseas. Most riders here are better served by a tapered directional all-mountain-freeride board: enough float for the good days, enough edge for firm mornings and the groomer back to the chair.
Volume-shifted shapes size down, often significantly, so use the manufacturer's weight range rather than your usual number. Directional freeride boards size roughly normal to slightly up. Waist width matters as much as length, particularly if you are a US 10 or above. Bring your boots in and we will work through it with you.
