Frequently Asked Questions

No, that is a common myth. Fatboy makes street legal models, and a fat tyre bike is exactly as legal as any other bike as long as it meets the street legal spec. We also stock Fatboy's higher-powered off-road models for riders who want more grunt. If you would like a hand choosing, give us a call.

In Australia a street legal e-bike is EN15194-certified: a 250W motor, pedal-assist, cutting off at 25km/h, which is treated the same as a regular bicycle with no licence or registration. The fat tyres make no difference to that. Fatboy has street legal models that meet this spec, and higher-powered off-road models that do not.

The range splits three ways. Street legal EN15194 models run a 250W continuous motor capped at 25km/h and are legal on Victorian roads and shared paths. Off-road models run higher output for private property and trails. Beyond that, the difference is frame style and riding position: some sit you more upright for commuting, others are longer and more moto-styled. Battery size varies across the range, which is what sets your real world distance.

That is the whole point of the brand. Two Australian mates built Fatboy around premium fat tyre parts and performance at a sharper price than the big-name brands. You get hydraulic brakes, quality componentry and fat tyre capability without paying a premium badge tax.

As a real world guide, a battery under 500Wh delivers roughly 30 to 50km on flat terrain at moderate assist, 500 to 750Wh gives 50 to 80km, and above 750Wh you can expect 80km or more. Claimed figures are best-case, measured flat with a light rider on low assist, so treat them as a ceiling rather than a target. Rider weight, hills, throttle use, tyre pressure and cold weather all reduce it. Underinflated fat tyres are the most common and most fixable cause of disappointing range.

Yes. Fatboy V3 models use Bafang high-torque motors, and torque rather than headline wattage is what decides hill performance. Street legal 250W models handle typical Melbourne inclines comfortably at moderate rider weights. If you ride steep hills regularly or carry loads, the higher-output off-road models have noticeably more in reserve. Expect any e-bike to use range faster on hills, since climbing is where the motor works hardest.

It depends how you get it. For local pickup we assemble and safety-check your Fatboy free in our Richmond workshop, so it is ready to ride. For shipped orders the bike arrives around 90 percent assembled, with just a few quick finishing touches to do yourself, such as fitting the front wheel, handlebars, pedals and seat. It is straightforward with the included tools and takes most people about 15 to 20 minutes, and Frosty's workshop is on the phone if you want a hand. We also handle service, spares and warranty seven days a week.

Yes. Demo bikes are at our Richmond store, 435A Bridge Road, open seven days. On a purchase this size it is worth riding one first, particularly to feel how the assist comes on and how the weight sits when you stop.
