Fat tyre e-bikes have a split in the market that most people do not discover until after they have bought. There are road legal EN15194 certified bikes, and off road unrestricted bikes with more power and higher top speeds. They look similar. They ride very differently. And in Victoria, using an unrestricted bike on public roads or shared paths is illegal.

Working out which category you are buying in, before you spend, is the most important decision here.

The short version

  • Commuting, bike paths, replacing car trips: EN15194 certified. Nothing else is legal on Melbourne paths.
  • Private property, trails, beach riding where permitted: off road unrestricted.
  • Flat to moderate terrain: rear hub motor is plenty. Hills or loads: mid drive.
  • Battery: under 500Wh gives 30 to 50km real world, 500 to 750Wh gives 50 to 80km, above 750Wh gives 80km and up.
  • Ignore headline wattage. Ask for the continuous rating and which modes the bike ships in.
  • Who should avoid fat tyres: riders who only ever ride smooth sealed roads and care about weight and rolling resistance.
  • Still unsure: ride two in Richmond. Fat tyre bikes feel very different from each other.

Assisted speed Capped at 25km/h Exceeds EN15194 limits
Legal on Victorian roads and shared paths Yes No

Who it suits Commuters, recreational riders, car trip replacement Riders with private land, performance over compliance

EN15194 is the European EPAC standard Australian states recognise for legal road and path use. The 25km/h cap sounds conservative, but in Melbourne traffic it is genuinely fast enough for most city riding, and it is what makes the Capital City Trail, Bay Trail and Yarra Trail legally available to you.

Unrestricted bikes give real performance gains: more torque, higher top speed, more capable on hills and rough ground. Fat tyres handle sand, gravel, grass and light trails a path bike cannot touch. They are simply not a road or path bike in Victoria, whichever mode you ride them in.

Which motor do you need?

Rear hub motor. Most common on fat tyre e-bikes. Simple, reliable, low maintenance. Good for flat to moderate terrain, which covers most Melbourne riding.

Mid drive motor. Sits at the crank and uses the bike's gears to multiply torque. Significantly better on hills and rough terrain. Found on higher end builds and worth the money if you actually ride hills.

On wattage. Stated wattage is almost always peak output, not continuous. A 750W motor might deliver 250W continuously in compliant mode, or full output unrestricted. Do not compare two bikes on headline wattage. Ask what the continuous output is and which modes it ships in.

How much battery do you actually need?

Battery capacity is measured in watt hours. More Wh means more range and more weight. Real world range depends on rider weight, terrain, assist level and speed.

Battery capacity Realistic range Suits
Under 500Wh 30 to 50km on flat terrain at moderate assist Short commutes, local riding
500 to 750Wh 50 to 80km Longer commutes, day rides, hills
750Wh and above 80km and beyond Big days, heavier riders, high assist use

Samsung and LG cells are the quality benchmark. Ask about the cell brand before buying on capacity figures alone, because two packs of the same stated Wh can age very differently.

Why fat tyres in the first place?

The wide profile, typically four inches, is what defines the category. Fat tyres give noticeably better stability and traction on loose, wet or uneven surfaces. They absorb road vibration without needing front suspension, and they can run lower pressures for grip on sand and soft ground.

The trade off is weight and slightly higher rolling resistance on smooth sealed roads. For Melbourne's mix of sealed paths, gravel, grass and beach, fat tyres are the right call. If you only ever ride smooth road, they are not.

Fat tyre e-bike FAQ

What is the difference between an EN15194 e-bike and an unrestricted one?

An EN15194 certified bike runs a 250W continuous motor, pedal assist only, capped at 25km/h, and is legal on Victorian roads and shared paths. An unrestricted bike exceeds those limits and is for private property and off road use only. They can look almost identical, so check before you buy.

How far will a fat tyre electric bike go on one charge?

Under 500Wh expect 30 to 50km on flat terrain at moderate assist. Between 500 and 750Wh expect 50 to 80km. Above 750Wh expect 80km or more. Rider weight, hills, tyre pressure and assist level all move these numbers, usually downward.

Can I ride a fat tyre e-bike on Melbourne bike paths?

Only if it is EN15194 certified. A certified bike is legal on the Capital City Trail, Bay Trail, Yarra Trail and the connected path network. An unrestricted bike is not, regardless of which mode you ride it in. This is the single most common mistake buyers make.

Do I need a mid drive motor?

Only if you ride hills regularly or carry loads. A mid drive sits at the crank and uses the bike's gears to multiply torque, so it climbs far better than a rear hub. For flat to moderate Melbourne riding, a quality rear hub motor is simpler, cheaper and entirely sufficient.

Is a higher wattage motor always better?

No. Stated wattage is almost always peak output rather than continuous. A 750W motor may deliver 250W continuously in compliant mode and full output only when unrestricted. Ask what the continuous rating is and which modes the bike ships in before comparing two bikes on headline wattage.

Can I test ride a fat tyre e-bike before I buy?

Yes. We keep demo bikes at our Richmond showroom at 435A Bridge Road, open seven days. Fat tyre bikes vary a lot in how they carry weight and how the assist comes on, so riding two back to back is the fastest way to work out which one suits you.
