Mt Buller vs Falls Creek vs Mt Hotham — Which Victorian Resort?

Melbourne riders are within driving distance of three major resorts. Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller each offer something meaningfully different. The mistake most people make is defaulting to whichever resort a friend mentioned rather than matching the resort to what they want from the trip.

Mt Buller — Closest, Best for Groups

Distance from Melbourne: approximately 230km, 3 hours. Vertical drop: 400m across 300 hectares.

Buller is the closest major resort and the most accessible. Terrain skews intermediate — long groomed runs, some good steeps on Summit and Burnt Hut, a decent park. Not the place for expert riders wanting challenging lines, but for mixed-ability groups it works well because everyone finds something appropriate.

The village is the most developed — accommodation, restaurants and bars all on-snow or a short walk. Better for first trips, easier for groups who want everything in one place.

Best for: first-timers, groups with mixed ability, weekend proximity trips, riders who want on-mountain village life. Not ideal for: experienced riders wanting challenging terrain, avoiding weekend crowds.

Falls Creek — Best All-Round Resort in Victoria

Distance from Melbourne: approximately 375km, 4 hours. Vertical drop: 267m across 450 hectares.

Falls Creek is the pick for most riders. More terrain than Buller, better snow reliability, a fully on-snow village, and genuine variety across ability levels without feeling compromised at either end. The snowfield is flatter overall than Hotham but the variety is excellent. Summit and Ruined Castle have the best steep terrain. The park is well maintained. Wombats Ramble is one of the best beginner-to-intermediate cruisers in the country.

Falls holds snow better than Buller in marginal conditions. When a warm week hits and Buller is icy, Falls often still has reasonable cover. For August trips this matters.

Best for: all-round riders at any level, anyone making one annual trip wanting the best overall experience. Not ideal for: pure beginner groups who do not need the full range, anyone prioritising proximity over quality.

Mt Hotham — Best Terrain, Most Serious Resort

Distance from Melbourne: approximately 370km, 4 hours. Vertical drop: 395m across 320 hectares.

Hotham has the best terrain in Victoria for experienced riders. The village sits at the top rather than the base, meaning runs go down in multiple directions. Big D, Orchard and the Extreme Skiing Zone are the best serious terrain in the state. For riders who want steeps, trees and variable snow, Hotham delivers in a way Buller and Falls do not quite match. Also less crowded than Buller on weekends.

The trade-off: harder to navigate as a beginner, less developed village, confusing terrain layout on your first trip.

Best for: intermediate to advanced riders wanting challenging terrain, experienced groups. Not ideal for: beginners, families with young kids, first-time resort trips.

Quick Pick

  • First trip or mixed group: Mt Buller.
  • Best all-round resort week: Falls Creek.
  • Best terrain for experienced riders: Mt Hotham.

Victorian snow is wetter and heavier than Japan or the US. Outerwear waterproofing matters — 15,000mm and above for anything beyond a day trip. Need your board waxed before the season? Frosty's workshop at our Richmond store handles hot wax, edge tune and base repair year-round.
