Mt Buller is three hours from Melbourne. That's the whole pitch, and it's why it's the home mountain for most Melbourne snowboarders — the place we learn, the place we bring friends who've never seen snow, and the place we go on a Thursday when the forecast looks good.
It's also underrated by riders who assume proximity means compromise. At 1,805m with 300 hectares and 81 runs, it's the largest resort in Victoria, and when it snows properly it's genuinely excellent.
Why we know this mountain
Our co-founder Frosty grew up at Buller. He went to school on the mountain and spent his formative years riding it, and some of the crew he grew up with still live and work up there — running the park, running the lifts, working in the village.
That means when you ask us about Buller you're not getting a brochure. You're getting someone who knows which runs hold snow longest, which parts of the Front Face catch the wind, and where the side hits are that don't show up on the trail map.
The mountain by the numbers
| Summit elevation | 1,805m |
| Village elevation | 1,600m |
| Vertical drop | 430m |
| Skiable terrain | 300 hectares |
| Runs | 81 |
| Lifts | 19 |
| Terrain split | 5% beginner, 41% intermediate, 51% advanced |
| Distance from Melbourne | 240km, about 3 hours |
That terrain split is worth sitting with. Over half the mountain is aimed at confident intermediate to advanced riders. Buller is not a beginner mountain, though the beginner area it does have is genuinely good.
What's the terrain actually like?
For beginners
The Bourke Street beginner area and the Wombat terrain have gentle slopes with dedicated lifts, right by the village with ski school on hand. Because the mountain skews advanced, you're not fighting the intermediate crowd for space, which makes Buller a strong first-season resort.
For intermediates
This is Buller's sweet spot. The Blue Bullet area, International, and the runs off the Chamois lift give you consistently good terrain without the exposure of the Front Face. Burnt Hut on the back side is a long, satisfying cruiser with good visibility. Midweek these runs are genuinely uncrowded.
For advanced riders
The runs off the Summit Quad access the best of the mountain. Front Face runs like Bourke Street and Shakey Knees are properly steep by Australian standards and hold conditions well on cold mornings. The World Cup run is where national and international racing happens and it's a serious carving run when groomed.
When the snowpack is right, the trees on the southern side are some of the best natural riding in Victoria. Plan a midweek day — the upper lifts get busy on weekends.
The terrain parks
Buller's park culture punches well above what most people expect from a Victorian resort, largely because of the Skyline Social Club — the crew who run the park operation. They're on the mountain most of the season, they shape it consistently, and the community around it is tight the way good park scenes always are.
- Bourke Street Park — entry-level, near the top of the Bourke Street Express. Good for working up to park riding.
- Skyline Park — the main mid-mountain park. Rails, boxes and jumps in a proper progression. Where most riders spend their park time.
- Summit Park — expert only. One XL jump when conditions allow.
- Rider Cross Course — next to the Skyline T-Bar. Most visitors miss it entirely.
The progressive layout means you can spend a full day in the park at any level and find something appropriate.
How do you get to Mt Buller from Melbourne?
Take the Maroondah Highway northeast through Lilydale, Healesville and Alexandra to Mansfield, then 44km up the Mount Buller Road. About three hours from the CBD in normal conditions, and no technical mountain road until the last stretch.
- Chains. Required when signs say so, June through October. Hire them in Mansfield on the main street — allow twenty minutes. If you're doing regular trips, buy a set.
- Parking. Day parking at the base with a visitor fee. On-snow accommodation removes the daily drive.
- Fuel. Fill up in Mansfield, both directions.
- Traffic. Friday afternoon on the Eastern Freeway is real. Leave before 2pm or after 7pm. Saturday, a 6am departure misses almost everything and puts you on the first chair.
- Bus. Several operators run day and overnight coaches from Melbourne if you'd rather not drive.
When is the best time to ride Mt Buller?
The season runs from the June long weekend to late September or early October depending on snowfall.
June is variable. Often good cover up top with thin or closed terrain lower down. July and August are peak, and historically the snowiest weeks are late July into early August. September is excellent for experienced riders — crowds thin out and spring conditions bring soft afternoon snow.
Check the snow report before you leave Melbourne. A 45cm base covers most terrain, but 20cm overnight changes the day completely. Buller's snowmaking is among the most extensive in Australia, so key runs stay open even when nature isn't helping.
Lift passes and how to save money
Buller uses dynamic pricing, so booking ahead costs less than buying at the gate. A midweek day booked in advance can be significantly cheaper than the same day walked up to on a Saturday. Always pre-purchase online.
Multi-day and season passes make sense from around the third visit. The Ikon Pass covers Buller as a partner resort with a set number of days depending on tier, and it also covers Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, and international resorts including Niseko and Hakuba Valley. For a Melbourne rider doing 5 to 10 days across Victorian mountains and thinking about Japan, Ikon usually wins on the maths.
Where to stay
On-snow village. At the lifts when they open, back when you're done. No driving, no chains. Lodges from budget shared rooms up to hotel options.
Mansfield. Significantly cheaper, 45 minutes down the road. Good restaurants, proper country town. Stock up on supplies before you head up.
What should you wear at Mt Buller?
Buller sits lower than Falls Creek or Hotham, which means it can get warm and wet mid-day even in peak winter. And the wind off the Summit is significant, especially on the Front Face — the difference between a sheltered groomer and the exposed ridge is substantial.
- A waterproof shell, not a heavily insulated jacket. Pit zips matter here.
- A mid layer you can pack into a bag when it warms up.
- Merino or synthetic base layers. Never cotton.
- Helmet. Non-negotiable.
- Goggles with a low-light or variable lens. The light changes fast at Buller.
- Waterproof gloves, not just warm ones.

Gear before you go
Buller's on-mountain hire is reasonable, but you'll ride better on your own gear that actually fits. Past your first couple of seasons, buying pays off quickly — in performance and in the cost difference over multiple hire days.
Come into Richmond before you go. We can set up a full kit — board, boots heat moulded free, bindings dialled to your stance — in an afternoon, and our workshop runs seven days for waxing and tuning. Three hours is a long way to drive to find out your bindings aren't right.
Food and après
The village has everything from on-mountain cafeterias to sit-down restaurants. The Kooroora Hotel is the traditional après spot, central in the village with an outdoor terrace that catches the sun on good afternoons. Mansfield on the way home has several good restaurants and wineries worth stopping for.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Mt Buller from Melbourne? 240km, about three hours by car via the Maroondah Highway through Mansfield. It's the closest major resort to Melbourne and the only one realistically done as a day trip.
Is Mt Buller good for beginners? Yes, though only 5 per cent of the terrain is beginner-rated. The Bourke Street and Wombat areas are genuinely good and have dedicated lifts, and because the mountain skews advanced you aren't competing for space.
When does Mt Buller open? The June long weekend, running to late September or early October depending on snowfall. July and August are peak.
Do I need snow chains for Mt Buller? Carry them June through October. They're required when signs indicate, and you can hire them in Mansfield on the way up.
Is the Ikon Pass worth it for Mt Buller? Usually, if you're riding 5 to 10 days a season. It covers Buller, Falls Creek and Hotham plus international resorts including Niseko and Hakuba, so it often beats a single-resort season pass for Victorian riders.
Does Mt Buller have a terrain park? Four of them. Bourke Street for entry level, Skyline as the main park, Summit for experts, plus a rider cross course. The Skyline Social Club maintain them and the standard is high.
