Range is the first question most people ask about fat tyre electric bikes, and the spec sheet is almost never the right answer. Every manufacturer quotes range under optimal conditions. Real riding in Australia looks different.
We have been selling and servicing fat tyre electric bikes for years. Here is what the range actually looks like in the real world, and how to plan around it properly.
Why Spec Sheet Range Is Not Your Range
The maximum range figure on any electric bike is calculated under best-case conditions. The rider is typically light, the terrain is flat, the assist level is at its lowest setting, and the temperature is ideal. Change any of those variables and the number changes.
This is not dishonest marketing — it is physics. Plan conservatively and you will rarely be caught short.
What Actually Affects Range
Rider weight
The single biggest variable. A 90kg rider draws significantly more battery than a 70kg rider on the same bike, same route. If you are at the heavier end of a bike's rated payload, subtract 20 to 25% from any range figure before using it for planning.
Assist level
Most fat tyre electric bikes have 3 to 5 assist modes. The difference in range between ECO mode and maximum assist can be 40 to 50%. On flat Melbourne paths, most riders do not need maximum assist. Save the top modes for hills and headwinds.
Terrain
Hills draw battery fast. Melbourne is broadly flat but has short steep sections throughout. Each hill draws more battery than a kilometre of flat ground.
Speed
Riding at 20km/h uses less battery than riding at 25km/h. The difference compounds over a long ride. If range is tight on your commute, backing off speed slightly extends it meaningfully.
Temperature
Lithium batteries perform less efficiently in cold weather. Melbourne winters can reduce effective range by 10 to 20% compared to summer.
Tyre pressure
Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance, which costs battery. Fat tyre electric bikes run at lower pressures than standard bikes — typically 10 to 20 PSI depending on rider weight and terrain. Check monthly.
Real-World Range — Melbourne Conditions
Based on our experience selling and servicing these bikes:
- 65 to 75kg rider, flat paths, ECO or MID assist: 60 to 80km
- 65 to 75kg rider, mixed terrain with hills: 45 to 60km
- 80 to 95kg rider, flat paths: 45 to 60km
- 80 to 95kg rider, mixed terrain: 35 to 50km
- 95kg+ rider, mixed terrain, mid to high assist: 30 to 45km
These are real-world estimates, not marketing figures. Your actual range depends on your specific bike, route, riding style and conditions.
How to Plan Your Commute
Take the real-world range estimate for your weight and terrain, divide by two for a return trip, and make sure your commute distance sits inside that number with 20% buffer remaining.
Example: 80kg rider, mixed Melbourne terrain, MID assist. Real-world estimate: 45 to 60km. Half of the conservative end: 22km each way. If your commute is under 20km each way and you charge at home each night, you are covered with room to spare.
If you can charge at work, your effective range doubles.
Removable Batteries
If your route is longer than your single-charge range, a removable battery changes the equation. Take it out, charge it at your desk, ride home on a full battery. Fatboy and Ampd Brothers both offer removable batteries on their main models.
The Honest Summary
For most Melbourne commuters doing 10 to 20km each way on relatively flat paths, any road-legal fat tyre electric bike we stock will handle the route comfortably on a single charge. For longer routes, hillier terrain or heavier riders, battery capacity becomes more important to check specifically.
