What is Nitro known for?

Nitro has been in snowboarding since 1990, and while the boards get more attention, the boots are where the brand quietly excels. Nitro boots have a reputation for fitting a wide range of feet straight out of the box, with liners that hold their shape rather than collapsing halfway through a season.

The range is also unusually complete. Whether you need something soft and forgiving for your first season or a stiff, precise boot for charging, there is a Nitro at that flex, usually in more than one lacing system.

Which Nitro boot should you get?

• Cypress sits at the softer, more forgiving end and suits riders progressing or spending most of their time in the park.
• Crown is the women's-specific all-rounder, built on a women's last rather than scaled down from a men's shell.
• Cave covers the mid to stiff all-mountain ground for riders putting in real days.
• Darkseid is the aggressive, stiffer option for riders who want maximum response.

Flex is the decision that matters most. Softer boots are easier to press and more comfortable while you build technique. Stiffer boots transfer input faster, which is what you want at speed and in bigger terrain. Buying stiffer than your riding warrants is a common and uncomfortable mistake.

TLS, BOA or traditional lacing?

Nitro offers all three, and they do genuinely different things.

• TLS is Nitro's own speed-lace system, with separate zones for the lower and upper foot so you can tension the forefoot and the ankle independently. Fast, and more adjustable than a single-dial system.
• BOA uses a dial and steel cable for quick, even tightening that works easily with cold or gloved hands. Dual BOA setups give you two zones.
• Traditional laces are slowest but let you tune pressure precisely across the foot, and they can be repaired anywhere for almost nothing.

For most riders TLS or BOA is the better daily choice. Traditional laces still suit awkward foot shapes that need pressure controlled zone by zone. Our lacing systems guide breaks down all three, including single versus double BOA.

Does Nitro make Burton Step On compatible boots?

Yes. Nitro produces Step On compatible boots, which matters if you like the Step On system but do not want to be limited to Burton's own boot shapes. Boot fit is the most important part of your setup, so having a genuine second shape available in the system is a real advantage.

Step On compatible boots only work with Step On bindings. They will not work with traditional strap bindings, so decide on the system before you buy either half of it.

How should a Nitro boot fit?

Snug, to the point of feeling slightly too tight in the shop. The liner packs out roughly half a size with use, so a boot that feels perfect on day one will feel loose by mid-season. Your toes should just brush the end when you stand upright and pull back off it when you flex forward.

Your heel is the part that must not move. Heel lift causes lost response, bruised toenails and burning calves. We heat-mould every pair free with any boot purchase, which forms the liner to your actual foot shape and removes most break-in time.
