Shell or insulated pants

Shell pants are uninsulated, pure waterproof-breathable protection that you layer thermals under. They are the more versatile choice: dump heat on spring days, add a base layer when it is cold, and they pack down smaller in a bag. Insulated pants build the warmth in, which is simpler if you feel the cold or ride mostly cold days, but gives up temperature range. For Australian and most Japan conditions, a good shell plus a thermal layer covers the widest span of days you will actually ride.

What do the waterproof numbers mean

Waterproof ratings are given in millimetres of water column. 10,000mm is a solid all-round minimum for Australian conditions, and 15,000mm and up handles heavy wet snow and long sit-down days. Just as important, look for fully taped seams and water-resistant zips, because a high fabric rating means very little if water is getting in through the stitching. A DWR coating on the face fabric keeps the outer from wetting out and soaking through.

How should snowboard pants fit

Roomier than ski pants by design. You need to crouch, jump, tweak and sit down without the pants fighting you, but not so loose that they drag under your board or catch an edge. Try them on over a thermal, and check the waist adjustment works over layers rather than just over jeans in the change room.

Which features matter

Boot gaiters to keep snow out on deep days, which is the difference between damp socks and dry ones. Thigh or inner-leg vents to dump heat on the hike or on spring laps. Adjustable waist tabs or belt loops for a dialled fit over layers. Bibs add coverage up the back for deep-snow and sit-down days and close the gap that opens when you are reaching or bending.
