Most e-bike faults are not motor failures. They are connectors, settings, tyre pressure and brake alignment, and a good share of them cost nothing to fix.

Work through this in order. The free checks at the top solve the large majority of what comes into our workshop.

Start here, in this order

  1. Is the battery charged, switched on, and properly latched? Not just sitting in the cradle. Latched.
  2. Check tyre pressure. It explains more range and handling complaints than anything else.
  3. Wiggle the connectors at the battery, display and motor. Vibration works them loose.
  4. Squeeze each brake lever. A sticking cutoff switch stops the motor without an error.
  5. Note any error code exactly before you turn it off.
  6. Then start thinking about parts.

E-bike problems by symptom

It will not turn on

Three things, in order.

Is the battery latched, not just seated? This is the most common cause by a wide margin. A battery can sit in its cradle looking correct while the contacts are not fully engaged. Remove it and reinsert it firmly until it locks.

Does the battery have its own switch? Many packs do, separate from the display power button, and it is easy to knock off when handling the bike.

Does it hold charge? Put it on the charger and watch the indicator. If the charger light never changes state, the problem is upstream of the bike entirely.

If all three check out and there is still nothing, you are into fuses and connectors, which is a workshop job rather than a roadside one.

It will not charge

Test the charger first, not the battery. Chargers fail more often than packs. Plug it into a power point you know works and watch whether the indicator changes when you connect the battery. No change usually means the charger.

Check the port for debris. Charge ports on fat tyre bikes sit low and collect grit and water.

Was it run completely flat and left? This is the one that catches people. If a pack is drained and then stored for weeks, the battery management system can drop into a protective sleep to stop the cells being damaged further. Many chargers will not wake it. That needs workshop equipment, and it is one of the more common reasons a battery arrives here.

Is it cold? Lithium packs refuse to charge below a certain temperature by design. Bring it inside, let it reach room temperature, and try again.

It cuts out while riding

Two different faults that feel identical.

Cutting out over bumps is almost always a physical connection. Vibration works battery and motor connectors loose over time, and fat tyre bikes see plenty of it. Reseat everything and check the battery mount for movement.

Cutting out under load, on hills or hard acceleration, is usually the battery management system protecting the pack. As cells age or if one is weaker, voltage sags under load, the system sees it and cuts power to prevent damage. It comes back after a moment, then does it again on the next hill. If that happens at full charge, the pack needs testing.

Range has dropped

Before assuming the battery is dying, work through these.

  • Tyre pressure. The most under-appreciated factor by a distance. Underinflated fat tyres have enormous rolling resistance and quietly eat range.
  • Temperature. Cold reduces available capacity temporarily. Winter range genuinely is lower, and it returns in spring.
  • Assist level and throttle use. Sitting in the highest assist or riding on throttle uses far more than pedalling with moderate assist.
  • Load, terrain and wind. All real, all often forgotten when comparing to a memory of an early ride.
  • Age. Batteries lose capacity over hundreds of charge cycles. A gradual decline over years is normal, not a fault.

The tell: a drop that appears on every ride regardless of conditions points to the pack. A drop that varies with weather and route does not.

Error codes

There is no universal e-bike error code standard. The same number means different things on different controllers, so a code list from another brand is worse than useless.

Write the code down exactly as displayed before you power off, then check it against the manual for your bike or ask us. Most codes point at a sensor or a connector rather than a failed motor, which is usually better news than it feels like.

If the code returns immediately every time you power on, stop riding it and bring it in. If it appeared once and cleared, note it and watch for a pattern.

Noises, brakes and drivetrain

Plenty of what feels like an electrical fault is ordinary bike mechanics, made louder by the extra weight and torque.

Diagnose with the motor off. Lift each wheel, spin it, and listen. A noise present with no power is mechanical.

  • Rhythmic scrape once per wheel rotation: brake rotor rubbing the pad, or a rotor slightly bent. Watch the gap as it spins.
  • Ticking that speeds up with the wheel: often a loose spoke. Fat tyre wheels carry a lot of load.
  • Squealing under braking: contaminated pads or rotor. Clean the rotor thoroughly. Once pads are contaminated they usually need replacing.
  • Grinding only under power: drivetrain or hub bearing.
  • Chain slipping when you accelerate: worn chain and cassette. Motors accelerate this wear considerably compared to a pushbike, so e-bike drivetrains need replacing sooner than people expect.

E-bike troubleshooting FAQ

Why won't my electric bike turn on?

Check the battery is fully seated and locked in, that its own power switch is on, and that it holds charge. A battery that is seated but not latched is the most common cause. If the battery is charged and switched on and nothing happens, suspect the main fuse or a connector.

Why won't my e-bike battery charge?

Test the charger on a power point you know works and check its indicator light changes when connected. If the battery was run completely flat and left, the management system may have gone into a protective sleep that needs a workshop to wake. Cold batteries also refuse to charge.

Why does my electric bike cut out while riding?

Usually a loose battery connection shaken by vibration, especially over rough ground. It can also be the battery management system cutting power to protect low cells, or a brake cutoff switch triggering intermittently. Check the battery mount first.

Why has my e-bike range suddenly dropped?

Check tyre pressure first, since underinflated fat tyres cost a surprising amount of range. Then consider cold weather, which temporarily reduces capacity, and assist level. A permanent drop across every ride usually means the cells have aged.

What do e-bike display error codes mean?

Error codes are specific to the controller and display, so the same number means different things on different bikes. Write the code down exactly and check it against your manual or ask us. Most indicate a sensor or connector fault rather than a failed motor.

Why is my e-bike making a noise?

A rhythmic scrape usually means a brake rotor rubbing or a loose spoke. A grinding under power points to the drivetrain or a hub bearing. Spin each wheel off the ground and listen with the motor off first, which separates mechanical noise from motor noise.

When to bring it in

Stop riding and bring it to us if any of these apply: a burning or chemical smell, a battery that is hot, swollen or damaged, an error that returns every time you power on, brakes that do not stop you properly, or anything electrical after the bike has been submerged.
