Mt Buller — Closest, Best for Groups

Buller is the most accessible major resort. Terrain skews intermediate — long groomed runs, some good steeps on Summit and Burnt Hut, a decent park. For mixed-ability groups it works well because everyone finds something appropriate. The village is the most developed — accommodation, restaurants and bars all on-snow.
Best for: First-timers, groups with mixed ability, weekend proximity trips. Not ideal for: Experienced riders wanting challenging terrain, avoiding weekend crowds.
Falls Creek — Best All-Round Resort in Victoria

Falls Creek is the pick for most riders. More terrain than Buller, better snow reliability, fully on-snow village, and genuine variety across ability levels. Summit and Ruined Castle have the best steep terrain. The park is well maintained. Wombats Ramble is one of the best beginner-to-intermediate cruisers in the country.
Falls holds snow better than Buller in marginal conditions — when a warm week hits and Buller is icy, Falls often still has reasonable cover.
Best for: All-round riders at any level, anyone making one annual trip. Not ideal for: Pure beginner groups who don't need the full range, anyone prioritising proximity over quality.
Mt Hotham — Best Terrain, Most Serious Resort
Distance from Melbourne: approximately 370km, 4 hours. Vertical drop: 395m across 320 hectares.
Hotham has the best terrain in Victoria for experienced riders. The village sits at the top rather than the base. Big D, Orchard and the Extreme Skiing Zone are the best serious terrain in the state. Also less crowded than Buller on weekends.
Best for: Intermediate to advanced riders wanting challenging terrain. Not ideal for: Beginners, families with young kids, first-time resort trips.

The road from Mount Beauty up to the resort is a mountain road requiring chains to be carried from June through October. Most accommodation is on-snow within the Falls Creek village — staying on snow eliminates the daily mountain road drive entirely.
Late July and August are peak snowfall weeks at Falls Creek. The resort runs from mid-June to early October. Victorian school holidays in July are the busiest and most expensive period — if you can avoid them, midweek in late July or early August gives the best combination of snow and lower crowd levels.
