The price range for fat tyre electric bikes in Australia is wide. You can spend under a thousand dollars or over six thousand. What you get for that money varies significantly and the gap between cheapest and most expensive is not just about branding — it is about build quality, longevity and what happens when something goes wrong.
Under $1,500 — Proceed With Caution
Bikes exist at this price point through online marketplaces and importers with no local presence. The risks are real: battery cells of unknown provenance, BMS systems that may not manage charge and discharge safely, chargers not matched to the battery, and a parts and service situation that becomes clear only when something goes wrong. We do not stock bikes at this price point. Not because the margin does not work — because we are not confident enough in the quality and safety to put our name next to them.
$1,500 to $2,500 — Entry Level Quality
The bottom of the quality range from established brands. Better components than the budget import category — recognisable motor brands, quality battery cells, proper BMS management — but may compromise on finishing, battery capacity, or component tier compared to mid-range. For riders doing short, flat, light-use commutes, this range can work.
$2,500 to $4,000 — Where We Recommend Most Buyers Start
This is where Fatboy and Ampd Brothers primarily sit. At this price you get Bafang motors, Samsung or equivalent quality battery cells, hydraulic disc brakes, real build quality and real brand support. You are not making meaningful compromises on the things that determine long-term reliability. A bike at this price, properly maintained, should give you several years of regular riding without major issues.
$4,000 to $7,000 — Premium
Super73 S-Series and upper-tier configurations. More battery capacity, better finishing, stronger brand substance and community. If the Super73 aesthetic and community are part of your decision, the premium reflects real value. If you want the best commuter bike regardless of brand, a well-chosen mid-range Ampd Brothers or Fatboy gives you most of what matters at a lower price.
$5,000 and Up — High-Performance Unrestricted
FlightRisk and equivalent high-output unrestricted bikes. These are not commuter bikes with more power — they are a different category of machine for off-road use. Entirely the wrong choice if Melbourne bike paths are your primary use.
Total Cost of Ownership
Tyres: expect replacement after 2,000 to 4,000km of regular use.
Brake pads: annual inspection, replace when worn. Inexpensive parts, straightforward job.
Chain: clean and lube regularly. A worn chain accelerates drivetrain wear — maintain it.
Battery: 3 to 5 years of regular use before meaningful capacity degradation with proper care.
Servicing: our 6 months of free adjustments covers early ownership. Annual servicing at our Richmond workshop after that.
The Value Comparison
A $3,500 fat tyre electric bike ridden 5 days a week for commuting over a 3-year period works out to roughly $4 to $5 per riding day in capital cost alone — less than a single public transport journey. Against running a car for the same commute, the economics are not close.
