This question deserves a straight answer. Fat tyre electric bikes work well for heavier riders — the motor assist removes the effort barrier that makes regular cycling hard for people carrying extra weight, and the fat tyres provide a stable, forgiving platform. But there are a few things worth knowing before you buy.
Payload Ratings
Every electric bike has a maximum rated payload — the total weight of rider, clothing and any cargo. For the fat tyre electric bikes we stock, rated payloads are typically 120 to 150kg depending on the model. Check the specific figure for any bike you are considering.
Exceeding the rated payload affects frame stress over time, brake performance and how the motor handles sustained heavy loads. If you are approaching the upper end of a bike's payload rating, tell us — we will give you an honest assessment of whether that specific bike is appropriate and whether there is a better-suited option.
Range Adjustment for Heavier Riders
Heavier riders draw more battery than lighter riders on the same bike and route. A 95kg rider on a bike that advertises 80km range should plan around 50 to 60km in real conditions, not 80km. For most Melbourne commutes of 10 to 20km each way, the range is completely adequate even for heavier riders. For longer routes, check battery capacity carefully and consider whether a removable battery for charging at work would help.
Motor and Torque
Hills are where rider weight makes the biggest difference. A good Bafang motor — as fitted to Fatboy and Ampd Brothers bikes — handles Melbourne hills at these weights without drama. Melbourne is not particularly hilly compared to many Australian cities. If you are a heavier rider planning to ride genuinely hilly terrain regularly, ask us specifically about motor torque figures. Torque (Nm) is the more relevant number for hill climbing than rated watts.
Tyre Pressure for Heavier Riders
Heavier riders need slightly more tyre pressure for the same terrain. Running fat tyres too soft at higher weights increases the risk of pinch flats and reduces rolling efficiency. Start toward the middle of the recommended pressure range and adjust from there.
Which Bikes We Recommend
Fatboy and Ampd Brothers for heavier riders — both use Bafang motors with good torque output, both have substantial frame construction, and both are rated for payloads appropriate to heavier riders. Come in and tell us your weight and planned use. We will confirm which specific model is the right fit and make sure the setup is optimised before the bike leaves the store.
