Carver CX vs C7 Trucks — Which System Should You Choose?

Every customer who comes in looking at Carver asks the same question: CX or C7? It's the right question. They look almost identical. They ride completely differently. Here's the answer.


The Mechanical Difference

Both are Carver's front truck systems. The rear truck on a Carver board is a standard reverse kingpin truck regardless of which front system you choose — the difference is entirely in the front.

The CX front truck uses a traditional truck geometry with a modified kingpin angle that creates more pivot than a standard skateboard truck. It turns more than a regular truck, carves more fluidly, and generates more pump — but the movement arc is limited compared to the C7.

The C7 front truck uses a spring-loaded double-axis mechanism. The truck pivots on two axes simultaneously, which allows the front of the board to swing through a significantly wider arc than the CX. That wider swing is what generates the deep hip-driven pump and the bottom-turn feel that surfers immediately recognise.


How the CX Rides

More like a skateboard that carves unusually well. Responsive, precise, controllable. You can generate pump but it requires more body movement than the C7. The CX rewards a more aggressive, active riding style — you drive it rather than flow with it.

On tighter Melbourne paths and urban environments, the CX is more manageable than the C7. The tighter turning radius and more predictable response make it easier to navigate around pedestrians and corners without the board feeling like it wants to swing out from under you.

CX is the right call if: you're a skater first and want a surf-style carve without fully committing to a surf-training tool. You want something that works in tighter urban spaces. You prefer a more controlled, technical feel underfoot.


How the C7 Rides

Less like a skateboard, more like a wave. The front truck swings wide enough through each turn that the movement you need to drive it — compress on the front foot as you exit a turn, extend and pivot into the next one — is the same movement you use to pump down the line on a surfboard.

The first fifteen minutes on a C7 can feel loose and unfamiliar. Then something clicks and it starts to feel intuitive. Surfers click faster than non-surfers because the movement pattern is already in their muscle memory. Once it clicks, you can generate speed on flat ground indefinitely without pushing — just pump.

C7 is the right call if: you're a surfer and cross-training is genuinely the goal. You want the most surf-like feel available on concrete. You're prepared to spend an hour getting comfortable with the system before it rewards you. You have space to ride — the C7 is happiest on wide open paths, car parks and larger areas where you can draw out your carves.


The Honest Recommendation

Surfer, rides regularly, wants genuine cross-training benefit: C7. Every time.
Skater, curious about surf skating, wants something fun that carves well: CX.
Complete beginner to both surfing and skating: CX — it's more forgiving while you build the movement pattern.
Already have a CX and want to try the C7: come in and ride one before buying. The difference is immediately obvious and you'll know in five minutes which one you prefer.
