"Alright, let’s talk layers."
We hear it all the time in-store—“Do I really need thermals?” or “Won’t this jacket be enough on its own?”
Short answer: if you want to stay warm, dry, and out all day, the answer is yes—layering properly makes or breaks your day on the mountain.
Your snowboard jacket is designed to block wind and water, not necessarily to keep you warm. That’s where your thermal layering system kicks in. It traps heat, wicks moisture, and helps your outerwear do its job.
Think of it like building a house:
Base Layer = the insulation
Mid Layer = the heating system
Outer Layer = the roof
Leave one out and you’ll feel it by your second chairlift.
Base Layer (The Foundation)
Your first layer should be moisture-wicking, non-cotton, and close-fitting.
We recommend merino wool or technical synthetics—they keep you warm even when damp and dry super fast.
Tip from the crew: Go for a long top with thumb loops to keep snow out of your sleeves. Don’t skimp on a good pair of thermal pants, either.
Mid Layer (The Heat Trap)
This one depends on the day.
Cold? Layer up with a fleece, synthetic puffer, or lightweight down.
Spring slush? Skip it.
Your mid layer traps body heat and makes a massive difference once the sun drops or the wind picks up.
Staff pick: The Yuki Threads Lowdown Fleece—it’s breathable, warm, and doubles as an après layer.
Outer Layer (Your Armour)
This is your snowboard jacket and pants—your protection from snow, wind, and everything the mountain throws at you.
But remember: they’re shells, not ovens. Without the base and mid layers doing their part, you’ll freeze fast.
Make sure it’s got a solid 10K–20K waterproof rating and pit zips for venting.
When you're layered right, you sweat less, you stay out longer, and you ride better.
It’s not just about comfort—it’s about performance. Your muscles stay warm, your gear lasts longer, and you're not wasting energy trying to stay dry.
We stock thermal gear we’ve actually tested—on freezing chairlifts, storm days, and spring hikes.
Look for merino blend base layers, packable insulated mid-layers, and shell outerwear with proper venting and sealed seams.
