Where It Started
Skate Shop Day launched in 2020 with a simple idea — keep core skate shops alive. It was created by longtime skate figures Chris Nieratko and Scotty Coats, inspired by Record Store Day, but built specifically for skateboarding.
February was chosen for a reason. It’s one of the quietest times of year for retail globally. Foot traffic drops, weather turns, and independent stores feel it the most. Instead of letting that happen, Skate Shop Day was created to bring people back into stores and remind everyone what actually supports skateboarding.
